Winter Car Care for Long Island Area Honda Drivers

Winter Honda Care

Do you know how to take care of your car when mother nature keeps on dropping the temperature? We at North Shore Honda figured we'd lend you a hand; we’ve got some need to know tips to keep Long Island area drivers on the road this winter. Throughout the colder months, your car just needs a little extra pampering. So, here’s what you need to do:

The Winter Checklist:

  • Monitor the battery’s fluid level: If/when the fluid’s low, simply add distilled water. On maintenance-free batteries, make sure that the window at the top of the battery indicates a full charge. Since colder temperatures reduce the battery’s cranking power, you have to pay extra attention in the winter.
  • Replace your wiper blades: Swap out your ordinary blades for a set of winter blades; these bad boys are specifically constructed to withstand ice and snow. And you're supposed to replace your blades twice a year anyways.
  • Check the oil: You should be using multi-viscosity oil that has a “W” in this viscosity index; this stands for winter. Regular motor oil will thicken rather quickly when cold.
  • Consider new tires: All-season tires would be your best bet; they’ll get better traction.
  • Keep a winter roadside emergency kit in the trunk: Most of these kits include battery booster cables, an ice scraper, first-aid items, a portable shovel, a cell-phone charger, and items to assist you if stranded (most kits come with a flashlight and some include signaling cones).
  • Use an Ice scraper: Don’t try to remove the ice on your windshield using your wipers; just take a few minutes to clean off the front and back windshield correctly...with the scraper in the kit you're going to purchase.

At North Shore Honda, we’re here to keep your brand-new Honda in tip-top shape; with these few quick and easy protocols, you’ll be set to take on winter's wrath. Feel free to schedule service online or contact our Honda service department on Long Island at (866) 695-6642. We’ll have your car prepped for winter in no time.
